Through his travels, François Dautresme, founder of the Compagnie Française de l’Orient et de la Chine, developed a passion for Chinese craftsmanship. Through to the late 1990s, he built up a large collection that reveals daily life in a society in the throes of transformation and ingeniousness at every turn: kites in the shape of animals, cricket cages, pharmacopoeia items, a tiny bird drinker, lucky charms, bamboo baskets and much more... The exhibition offers an intimate dive into the China of yesteryear, where every object was designed for its utility.
