Exposition Carnets de collections

Notebooks on the collections

Temporary exhibition

From 16 May 2017 to 02 September 2018

Heir to five centuries of collections, the musée des Confluences has one of the most abundant heritage collections of France. After the success of the exhibition Dans la chambre des merveilles [In the House of Wonders], illustrating the birth of the scientific spirit in the curiosity cabinets of the 17th century, the musée des Confluences continues this long history and goes back to the sources of its collections. Enter our storage areas!

Real treasures for today’s scientists, the collections of the musée des Confluences lead a double life. Displayed in the heart of our exhibitions, they are also the subject of studies that enable us to gain a better understanding of the world around us.

During the 19th century, the objects acquired scientific value. In a context of technical innovation and colonial expansion, scientific journeys and missions increased. The collections grew considerably. Explorers, knowledgeable or amateurs, travelled the world and brought back objects which were then donated, exchanged or sold to the museum.

In a journey, which takes us into the heart of the storage areas, the exhibition invites us to question the fundamental missions of museums and to question ourselves on the heritage of tomorrow.
